EQ and Diversity

Diversity exists in all workplaces because we are human, and no two of us are the same.

In broad terms, diversity is any dimension that can be used to differentiate groups and people from one another. It means respect for and appreciation of differences in ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, education, and religion. But it’s more than this. We all bring with us diverse perspectives, work experiences, life styles and cultures. As a source and driver of innovation, diversity is a “big idea” in business and in society. At DRW Life Skills Institute we know the power of diversity is unleashed when we respect and value differences.

Last August 14, I had the opportunity to attend to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Training Institute Orlando Seminar.

What an amazing AHA moment!!! I learned how Emotional Intelligence training can reduces or even avoid discrimination, harassment and retaliation complaints at the workplace, but also I learned that FEAR is the main cause why employees don't speak out.

The lack of assertiveness, emotional self-awareness and impulse control at the workplace causes toxic environments which affect productivity and health.

Also, I learned...

  • The EEOC enforces laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, and genetic information, as well as retaliation for protected activity.

  • Harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

  • There is a time limit to file a charge: You have either 180 or 300 days from the day you knew about a negative job action to file a charge.

  • The EEOC does not charge a fee to investigate, mediate or litigate charges.

  • It is against the law for an employer to retaliate against you because you complained about job discrimination, because you gave evidence in a job discrimination matter, or because you filed a charge f job discrimination with the EEOC.

  • You can contact EEOC visiting www.eeoc.gov or calling1-800-669-4000

Our goal is to provide Emotional Intelligence training that has broad impact on you and your organization. Specifically, Emotional Intelligence training could enhance your workplace environment and reduce EEOC charges.
